North Devon and Exmoor have recently
been voted one of the most scenic holiday destinations in the UK. Of course we
totally agree!
The Rockford Inn is located in the hamlet of Rockford close to the village of Brendon in the beautiful Brendon Valley. As well as being in a special conservation area and of course in the heart of Exmoor National Park, the Inn is also in the
'Watersmeet Site of Special Scientific
Interest' (English Nature pdf file) - renouned for its ancient oak woodlands. A stroll or a foray along the river can be a real delight. You just never know what you may see - whether it be Irish Spurge in full bloom, Salmon jumping a water fall, a fleeting glimpse of a Red Deer Stag through the trees or if you are very lucky, an Otter snaking its way across a deep
pool. It's a dream for naturalists, photographers, artists, anglers and walkers alike.
The Brendon Valley became famous for the setting of RD Blackmores novel 'Launa Doone'. Indeed, a favourite walk from the Inn is up through the 'Doone Valley' through National Trust woodland and moorland. Another favourite is in the opposite direction following an undulating riverside path along the East Lyn River down to 'Watersmeet' where the East and West Lyn rivers meet. Here you can stop for a cup of tea and a piece of cake at a restored hunting lodge owned by the National Trust.
